I will be flying in for the ride. I have never packed a bike for flying, any advice for packing the bike for flying? Also, does anyone know of any bike rental options? I don't don't see anything mentioned on the Ride Site.
Not sure if you received a reply. Ive traveled internationally with my bike. several airlines now accept a bicycle in a hard shell case but the bike needs to be fairly disassembled. Im an American Airline guy, this works for them, however, you should call and confirm with them. Go on their web site and print the free as luggage info so you have it at check in. Ive found this helps check in agents so they dont try to charge you. Also, packing in a hard shell case, means wheels off, seat off, rear derailleur off, handlebars off, pedals off. Realistically, if you work on your bike, this is not tough. You have to bring the right tools to assemble at the start. Then disassemble for trans home. You local bike shop, can do the work for you initially, and you can have them teach you. OR another member of your local bike club. Get a shell box WITH WHEELS. With the case, and all the extra stuff you can pack in the case (extra gear, clothing) you can approach the magic max of 50 pounds. If over, the airline will charge you dearly. One note, once you have traveled with your bike, you will find it fun to take to all the places you go. Happy trails, Bruce Hill.
Watch a video. I watched the one on rivbike.com Get a bike box from the bike store. Take off the pedals, front wheel. Zip tie front wheel to rear. I leave the derailleur on since the wheel protrudes enough to protect it. Take the setapost out and drop it in the box. Turn the handlebars. pad w/bubble wrap mailers, pipe insulation, pool noodles... Tape up the box. TSA will inspect it. Get a firm piece of foam and cut holes for the fork. Nice to get plastic pieces to put on the ends where the skewers were so they don't poke through the box. Remove front skewer and drop in the box. Loose stuff I usually put in a small box or padded envelope to keep it together.
